WE CAN'T CHANGE THE WORLD?

IF A HUNGRY CHILD WENT TO SLEEP IN A HEAP OF GARBAGE YESTERDAY, BUT IS LIVING, PLAYING AND LEARNING IN A LOVING COMMUNITY TODAY - HASN'T THE WORLD CHANGED JUST A LITTLE?

Our purpose

...is to support disadvantaged children in need emotionally, educationally and vocationally, to lead them out of poverty and to enable them to lead a self-determined life.

Kinderhilfe Kambodscha is committed to helping children in difficult circumstances. We accompany and support them on their path to emotional stability, social participation and economic independence.

It is important to us that the children feel safe and that they belong and that they are taught important values and life skills.

Kinderhilfe Kambodscha was founded in 2004 by Michael Weiss. He founded the German association KKe.V. Aachen and its sister organisation KKEV Cambodia in Cambodia, which is recognised as an international NGO. KKEV Cambodia runs two facilities in Sen Sok, an administrative district of Phnom Penh with high levels of child poverty and unemployment: a children's village and a street children's programme (SCP) for a total of 220 children.

Children’s village: Up to 100 children aged between 2 and 21 live in the children’s village. They come from disadvantaged and often traumatic backgrounds, live in small groups and attend public school. The children’s village offers additional support in maths, English, Khmer and IT. Children who need psychological support are accompanied by a psychologist.

  • Since KKEV Cambodia was founded, all young adults have found employment.

  • The first two pupils qualified for university in 2023.

  • Children who have never been to school before keep coming back.

Street Children Programme (SCP): Up to 120 children between the ages of 7 and 19 who live in the very poor community of Sen Sok, where the Children’s Village is located, and who can hardly be supported by their families, receive help in the Street Children Programme (SCP) so that they can finish school. In addition to school support, they receive a daily meal, which is very important for their families to support their participation in the SCP. As in the children’s village, the aim is for the children to complete vocational training after school, to escape poverty and lead an independent life.

  • Until 2023, the SCP could only support pupils up to 6th grade.

  • Since January 2024, thanks to the Fourfold Foundation Switzerland, the SCP has also been able to provide educational support to pupils in grades 7-12. The SCP was fully utilised within 4 weeks.

CAMBODIA IN NUMBERS

20.5% of the population lives on less than US$ 2.15 per day.

Almost half of children (48.7%) under the age of 17 are considered multidimensionally poor - affected by poverty in the areas of income, education, health and housing.

One in five children lives below the poverty line, which means a child poverty rate of 22%.

One in five children is malnourished - stunting (stunted growth due to malnutrition) in children was 22% in 2021/22.

3 million children (1-14 years) experience violence in their families, and 27% of parents or carers consider corporal punishment necessary.
